Personal Growth Strategy #12: The Art of Great Communication

3/3/2025

Effective communication is at the heart of every successful family, organisation, and society. Leadership programmes consistently emphasise communication as a critical skill, as a leader’s ability to connect with others often defines their success.

But what makes someone a great communicator? While there are many aspects to effective communication,
becoming a better listener is one of the most powerful ways to improve. Great listeners do more than simply remain silent while others speak. They listen with their whole body, providing signals that show they are engaged and encouraging deeper conversation through open-ended questions.

Consider the difference between asking,
"Are you OK?", which invites a simple "yes" or "no" response, and "How
are you feeling now?", which encourages a more meaningful discussion. Active listening also involves being aware of body language and other non-verbal cues. If messages seem unclear, good listeners ask clarifying questions rather than making assumptions.

More importantly, great listeners make people feel valued. They create an atmosphere in which the speaker feels truly heard and understood, boosting their confidence and self-esteem. Even when they say very little, great listeners are often regarded as excellent communicators.

Think about the last time someone gave you their full attention—how did it make you feel? That same gift of genuine engagement is something we can share with others, strengthening our relationships and communication skills in the process.
